Insight x Welcome Rivers in Venice

leave a comment »

Last night, Angie and I went to an Insight Art Show in Venice Beach.  Some of her friends had some photos on the wall and we went in their support.  There were tons of Aussie dudes, skinny girls in tights and of course, only the most fashion-forward surf folk in the industry.  A band called TRMRS played as well as a DJ Geometric.  All in all, a fun time.  I took some video clips but I’m once I got home, I kinda just looked at it on my computer and said “now what?”,  maybe video stuff will come in the near future.

I told the event photog to take a photo of Billy Bob with his photograph so I could photograph them.  Be smart and click on the photo below.

The back of Warren’s body made the cover of Surfer magazine this month. Sick.

The drummer for TRMRS totally reminded me of my friend Kelsey who is also a musician.  This guy looks like how I remember Kelsey in 6th grade only now with facial hair.

Leo Romero was their guitarist.  Ok probably not.

And they had Iggy Pop’s nephew singing on a few tracks.  ok probably not again.

See you next time.

For me, 4th of July is one of those holidays where it seems that everyone has something super fun that they’re committed to doing and you get stuck deciding which friend of a friend’s barbeque will get you more “likes” on Facebook.  But in recent years, I seem to have joined the club of people that have something going on and I’ve been getting amped on it for weeks prior.   Allow me to explain.

My 4th of July went a little something like this.  Drive to San Diego, drink beers, go to a gay wedding, drink champagne, go to a gay bar for the reception, drink vodka, wake up feeling poorly, drink beeers, play beer pong, drink beers, go to the beach, drink jaeger, go to a bar, drink beers, watch firewoorks, and finally end the night with a giant maarshmallow fight on the beach.  (In case you didn’t notice, I started to slur my words a little there at the end of that sentence.)  My 4th of July was in no way productive but I definitely got a taste of the life I lived just a few years ago.  You see I’m suffering from a little thing called “getting older”.  It’s a disease where alcohol makes you really sick and you get tired way earlier and start to complain about little things that don’t really matter.

Highlight of the weekend definitely revolves around the über personal Rodgriguez/Tabatabai wedding at Balboa Park,  I’ve never seen a wedding go so smoothly nor feel so welcoming and warm.  I honestly felt that there were only people who had known Marc and Daryus for years prior or their families.  and me.  That last part made me feel really special.

All Star of the Weekend Award goes to Sean, the guy who just moved in downstairs under Stacey in Ocean Beach.  Highlights of his reign of terror include telling me “nice mole, it’s so asymmetrical” upon meeting me,  telling Amber that she seems really familiar cause “it’s hard to forget such a loud mouth” and telling Angie after putting on her makeup “that Wow!, she really did need makeup.”  This kid was on a quest to ruin any good first impressions that he may give off.  The best part was that I kept making fun of a Blue Caddy out front that read “OB JERY” on the license plate.  Turns out it was his car and he has a blog about it somewhere. <–Myspace page.  All in all, he’s actually a pretty good guy who just needs some help in figuring out what thoughts he should censor before allowing them to leave his mouth.  I hope he’s still around next time we stay at Stacey’s place.

I had an awesome time meeting all of Angie’s friends from her past and would do it all over again.  Now for the photos!Fence Behind Stacey’s Place in OB.  Pretty much sums up the OB vibe.

Matt and Ryan for Dubtree Collection

leave a comment »

After a month long hiatus of nothing new for the internet, what do i have to say for myself? Well, school’s wrapping up and quite frankly I’ve been having a bit of a photographer’s block.  It’s mostly because I don’t have anyone to shoot during the weekdays that I’m off and on weekends I work my part time job when all the normal people have free time.  Woe is me.  But really, I’m very open to anyone who’d want to do some kind of portrait session in the next couple of weeks.  Shoot me an email and we’ll talk.

Recently I met up with Matt Simmerman to see how his company is growing and to see how happy he was with the work I had done for him recently.  Sooner or later it ended up becoming late night photoshoot with no real plans or concepts.  Just Matt, Ryan and I driving around ending up behind a Walgreen’s in an alley near his house.  Luckily, these guys were very patient with me messing around with the lights every couple of frames and we ended up getting some pretty shots of them just hanging around in an alley at night.  I was gonna go into detail about the shoot but I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. Enjoy!
